Our big word in terms of learning this year at QM is WHY?  (POURQUOI?) Be sure to ask your kids why they’re learning what they’re learning (and, if you like, share the conversations in the comments)

Class Updates:

Grade 7/8: 5-card flicker stories are well underway, and I’m amazed at how well these classes write. We’ve been doing some small group editing, and hopefully, it’s helping the students see that their ideas are amazing, and we just need to focus on the small stuff Iadjective endings/verb endings) to polish the writing.

Grade 6/7: 5-card flickr is underway. Lots of great ideas being shared in small and full-group activities. Individual writing this week.

Grade 5/6:  We had a really good week, and one of the students said “Madame, French is way more fun when everybody participates!”. She’s right, and I hope other students have noticed that this week. Students will be writing some phrases bizarres this week.

Grade 4:   I’ll leave the Lady Gaga version of our story up for your enjoyment. We’ve started some simple question strategies, and have finally learned “why” and “because”, so that will let us start to extend our conversations in French. On the vocab list, we’re at the start of Test 12, with pourquoi and pense, if you want to practice.

In all classes, 10 minutes or so each day of reviewing new vocabulary at home (or review vocabulary right now) is very helpful. Let your kids teach you what they’re learning!

Instrumental music update: Every day (except Tuesdays) are open sign-out days – that means that anyone can take their instrument out after school. No class has first priority. Please encourage your child to bring their instrument home, as practice is one of the only ways to keep improving.

Band is up and going again on Wednesday mornings, at 8:10 (doors open at 8:00). All Grade 7 and 8 students are welcome, even if they didn’t play in band before Christmas. Practice is even more important for students who are playing in band, as we will be looking at some more complex material this spring. We also practice on Day 1 and 2nd break. For students who cannot practise at home, the music room is open Day 3 at 2nd break for practice time.

Trivia Questions:

1. Qu’est-ce que Eugénie Bouchard a fait?

2. Qui va jouer dans le SuperBowl? Où est-ce qu’on va jouer le match?

Web: Recently discovered this  website. I love the idea of it, and I feel like  it’s designed for kids of all ages. I’m in the middle of a self-created PD group learning about Tumblr. Here’s an utterly silly one from this week: benedict cumberbatch and otters . Do you use Tumblr? What makes it work for you?

Book: Still really enjoying “Seven for a Secret”, the book I mentioned last week. It’s not a fast read, because it’s written in “flash”, an urban dialect from the turn of the century, and I occasionally have to check the glossary. Very atmospheric, though.  A dilemma at my house – where to find decent YA fic that’s geared to boys, and maybe, just maybe, isn’t dystopic. Can anybody help? Please?

Music: Those of you who read this regularly know that I’m a huge fan of 50’s/60’s soul. So when Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings showed up on Q on Tuesday to play live, I was a happy camper. Live clip and interview/story here. Yes, 7/8’s, that is a baritone sax!
