I’m Madame Noble, and I teach Core French to students in Grade 5/6-8. I also teach music (vocal and instrumental) to those classes. 
On this blog, you’ll find what we’re doing in class, important dates, permission forms/letters to download and print at home (in case they didn’t make it home in the backpack), the trivia questions the class has been challenged with each week, and some links to websites, music and books you might find interesting.
I’ve chosen to use a blog in the hopes that it will start a conversation – so please feel free to leave a comment or a questions. Let’s keep the lines of communication open.
The big goal in my classroom is being able to communicate in our second language. We do our best to speak only in French, as much as we can, and to use the vocabulary we’re learning (using the AIM approach, where there is a sign-language type action for every word we learn – I sign, and the students speak) to convey our ideas. There’s a list here of the words we start with, and a look over it, to review, or remind your children of how much they know, would be a great idea.

This week in French: 
Grade 5/6:  Building vocabulary, showing our knowledge of the story, and working on learning our parts in the play are the big foci right now.
Grade 6: This group is getting a huge kick out of our story of a lonely frog looking for a friend. Working on small group and full-class reading, as well as answering questions based on the story.
Grade 7:  Lush/Najarro: movie focus: Mr Lush`s 7`s are presenting their conversations about going to a movie – time, date, transportation, which film, why/why not? Lots of things to think about and expand on. Ms. Najarro`s class are starting into brainstorming vocabulary for this task. 
Grade 8:   Reading comprehension will be a focus this week, as we continue to work on the play as main text. 
Music: 8`s and Mr Lush’s 7’s will be working on some comparative listening this week; Ms Najarro’s 7’s will prep for a playing test. 5/6 and 6 will be doing some critical listening, and some sound experimatation. 
All signouts are now open – come up and sign our your instrument. Weekends included.
Band:  Band – practices Tuesday and Thursday this week. 7’s will be focusing on pomp and circumstance. Wonderland is June 14 – permission forms are here: Appendix D1 – Parent Permission For Out-of-Classroom Program 2016

Books: I was away from home part of last week, and returned to an old favourite to help me relax. I can’t say enough good things about Guy Gavriel Kay’s YA fantasy novel, Ysabel. It’s about place, and growing up and family and….it’s pretty much perfect, and it takes place in Provence in May, and you should read it. 🙂

Music: It’s getting to be dreaming of summer festival time. These 3 are at Mariposa in Orillia the 2nd weekend in July. I’d love to be there:  3 Women and the Truth.

Grade 6: This group is getting a huge kick out of our story of a lonely frog looking for a friend. Starting to work together on small group play presentations.

Books: I devoured a terrific book this week. Very character-driven, which I’m realizing is very important to me. Lots of excitement, but with an important underlying theme. Iraq/Afghanistan vet comes home with PTSD and ends up investigating the death of a fellow veteran. If urban thriller with a strong protagonist is your thing, this might be up your alley. The Drifter

Music:

While it wasn’t the winner, this was one of our faves from this year’s Eurovision competition (is there a better way to spend a rainy Saturday?)

In all classes, 10 minutes or so each day of reviewing  vocabulary at home  is very helpful. Let your kids teach you what they’re learning!

Class Updates: (you can always check edsby for most up-to-date information)

Grade 5: We’ve started working on les phrases bizarres (weird sentences) which let us be very creative, and use our French vocabulary. Ask about them!

Grade 5/6: Amazing work on play presentations. We’re now moving into some creative activities and writing on what might happen next in the story.

Grade 6: Working on schedule writing, as well as editing our own work, and peer-editing.

Grade 7/8 and 8: Lots of research happening here on our passe-temps, and what they might cost!

Grade 6/7: Doing some regular verb work, as we look at the way flyers and publicity language uses the imperative form of action words.

Band news: Music Monday was a big success. We got some great press coverage. Music Monday Queen Mary

We are confirmed for Wonderland. I would still happily accept any parent volunteers!

Band practices are Wednesday morning. We start playing at 8:10, doors open at 8, so we can actually be playing by 8:10.

June 5: crazy excitement! PanAm torch run start of day event at QM at 11:15. Grade 8 student Katie Oickle is our runner. (yes, it’s also a PA day)

June 15-17: Grade 7/8 trip to Camp CanAqua

June 19: school track and field day

June 23: grad: breakfast 8 am, student vs teacher 3-pitch/volleyball 10:00, clap-out 11:30, grad ceremony 6:30.
