Our big word in terms of learning this year at QM is WHY?  (POURQUOI?) Be sure to ask your kids why they’re learning what they’re learning (and, if you like, share the conversations in the comments)

Class Updates:

Grade 7/8:Continuing to work on real-world vocabulary, as well as beginning a focus on futur proche and passé composé. We’ve been having a lot of fun using the game “Candy Crush” to work on our direction words – be sure to ask about it.

Grade 6/7: working on comprehension strategies based on the play.

Grade 5/6: Working on question and answer structures. Some time with the vocabulary list (below) might be one solution, if your child feels like they’re struggling.

Grade 4:  We should be moving into a some reading comprehension activities this week, based on the play.

Gesture vocab with english

In all classes, 10 minutes or so each day of reviewing new vocabulary at home (or review vocabulary right now) is very helpful. Let your kids teach you what they’re learning!

Instrumental music update: Every day (except Tuesdays) are open sign-out days – that means that anyone can take their instrument out after school. No class has first priority. Please encourage your child to bring their instrument home, as practice is one of the only ways to keep improving.

Band is up and going on Wednesday mornings, at 8:10 (doors open at 8:00). All Grade 7 and 8 students are welcome, even if they didn’t play in band before Christmas. Practice is even more important for students who are playing in band, as we will be looking at some more complex material this spring. We also practice on Day 1 and 2nd break. For students who cannot practise at home, the music room is open Day 3 at 2nd break for practice time. I’ll be looking for parents to join us on the band trip to Wonderland in June – cost will be between $50 and $60/student – those with season passes only pay for the bus.

Trivia Questions:

1. Qu’est- ce qui se passe dans le ciel à Peterborough dimanche?

2. Quel chef québecois a gagné le prix pour le meilleur (best) livre de cuisson (cookbook) dans le monde?

Web:

Mashable has an excellent up-to-date hit list of the passwords you should change, due to the Heartbleed bug. Also a reminder to use a browser other than Explorer as they work through their security breach.

Lots of fun May 4th Star Wars day goodies on the Internet yesterday. Did you have a favourite? Here are some examples. And thanks to Mr Brown for the point to this – Winnie the Pooh reads Darth Vader’s lines.

Book: Just slogged my way through “Insurgent”, the second in the Divergent trilogy, and really did find it a slog. Kept wanting to whack the main character and tell her to make up her mind, and also to trust her significant other. Anybody else have an opinion? Share it in the comments.

Music: It’s Music Monday today – and it’s the 10th anniversary of this event celebrating the importance of music education. So come join us at the shade shelter today at 11:30, as we join kids around the country and around the world in the I.S.S. song, and the joy of music.
