Our big word in terms of learning this year at QM is WHY? (POURQUOI?) Be sure to ask your kids why they’re learning what they’re learning (and, if you like, share the conversations in the comments)
Grade 7/8: We’ll be continuing working on centres. Students worked really well in small groups last week, speaking in French, working co-operatively, and accomplishing a variety of tasks. We’ll also be making my famous mock “Bûche de Noël” in both these classes. Let me know if you want the recipe!
Grade 6/7: Centres continue here as well. Each group should be able to get through 2 centres this week (we have writing, reading, listening and speaking centres).
Grade 5/6: This group will hopefully complete their Hour of Code activity this week, and also be working through at least 1 centre activity.
Grade 4: We had a lot of fun introducing an interactive French Advent calendar last week, which let us look at some aspects of French culture. This week, we’ll be working on holiday vocabulary, and with a little luck, creating a card to bring home.
In all classes, 10 minutes or so each day of reviewing new vocabulary at home (or review vocabulary right now) is very helpful. Let your kids teach you what they’re learning!
Instrumental music update: All classes have finished their first playing assessment. 6/7`s will be composing with Incredibox this week (7/8`s have finished this task). 7/8`s will be working on some basic theory work this week.
Band is Wednesday morning. We’re heavy into Christmas music for the concert on DECEMBER 17 (please put it on your calendar). Hockey players, dancers, etc., please let your coaches know that you have a band concert that evening (lots of notice is a good thing!). Band members need to be at school by 6:15 on Tuesday evening. We are on the program first, and should be done by 7:00 at the latest. We will also be Skyping with a music class in Durham, UK on Tuesday morning (yes, there’s an extra band practice Tuesday morning – but not one on Wednesday!) Music room is open every Day 3 at 2nd break for practice space.
Documents for download:
December 17: turkey lunch/holiday concert (6:30 for concert in evening)
December 20: P.A. Day – no classes.
January 6: School begins again after holidays.

Web: Hour of Code was a really interesting experience this week. Several classes had the chance to experiment with a program called Scratch, and worked on trying to build a web-based French holiday greeting card. It was fascinating as a teacher and parent to watch the kids experiment with this. Also interesting was seeing which kids followed the tutorial steps (which had some key information that they needed), and which ones just kind of forged ahead. Please ask about it, and have your kids show you what they created. If you go to the Hour of Code webpage, you can get to the Scratch tutorial from there, or try some of the other lessons that are there. I may be starting a coding club after school in the new year.
Book: Lots of lists around the interwebs of late for best books of the year. What would go on yours? Here`s a young adult list that the book club will have opinions about! The top book has not been a favourite of our Grade 7/8 readers.
Music: She and Him’s Christmas album is another favourite of mine. If you’re a New Girl fan, and don’t know about Zooey Deschanel’s musical side, this makes a lovely intro.
