Les nouvelles – le 23 au 27 september, 2013

I can be reached by e-mail at lisa_noble@kprdsb.ca. I tweet at @nobleknits2, and the class hashtag is #laclasseaqm.

Our big word in terms of learning this year at QM is WHY?  (POURQUOI?) Be sure to ask your kids why they’re learning what they’re learning.

Due to some changes in scheduling, I am no longer teaching Mrs Cullen’s Grade 5 class. Mme Daley has taken over teaching them, enabling me to teach instrumental music to the 3 main-floor classes each week.

Class Updates:

Grade 7/8: The Pinterest boards were a big hit for Mr Lush’s class. In case you didn’t get to see them, you can find the link here. Students wrote a paragraph to describe why they made their choices. Mr. Lush’s class has started working on “veux-tu danser”, while Ms Shaw’s are starting into “salut mon ami”.

Grade 6/7: Mr Dufrane’s class: Having a great time with this class. Ask about word-work-around or check out our story cube stories on Twitter. Reviewing basic vocabulary at the start of “Salut mon ami”.

Grade 5/6: Students completed their partner introductions, and will start into “L’arbre ungali”, with a focus on comprehension strategies.

Grade 4: It was great to see so many of you at the barbecue last week. Students had a great time challenging their parents to a game of “Step!” (ask about it). We’re starting to increase our vocabulary a lot! (ask about action words like jump, run and walk)

In all classes, 10 minutes or so each day of reviewing new vocabulary at home (or review vocabulary right now) is very helpful. Let your kids teach you what they’re learning!

Instrumental music update: We have been able to open up my schedule a bit, to allow me to teach instrumental music to the intermediate classes.  This program will include playing, listening, research and theory. The expectation is that students will take their instruments home to practice (or take advantage of practice times at school) for 30 minutes/week. Expect a contract for taking an instrument home in the next few weeks, or you can download it here. We’ll start sign-outs with Mr Dufrane’s class this Friday (September 27).

Important dates:

September 27: Terry Fox run – bring a toonie for Terry!

Trivia Questions:

1. Qu’est-ce que Ben Johnson a fait le 19 septembre, 1988?

2. Quelle émission (show) a gagné le Emmy pour drame? pour comédie?

Other stuff:

Web: The intermediate classes had some really great questioning discussions about the proposed Quebec charter of values, and the infographic found here. Great chance to bring current events into the classroom, and also look at how social media is affecting the story.

Book:  Great argument at book club this week over whether or note Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time was the worst book ever written. As you might imagine, if you know the book, battle lines were pretty quickly drawn!  Let us know what you think in the comments.

Music: I’m a pretty big Great Lakes Swimmers fan, so a solo album from frontman Tony Dekker makes me happy.  Here’s the single.
