Our big word in terms of learning this year at QM is WHY?  (POURQUOI?) Be sure to ask your kids why they’re learning what they’re learning.

Class Updates:

Grade 7/8: We begin our main story this week in these two classes – that means working on understanding strategies in our second language. What strategies can we use when we don’t understand new vocabulary? We may also work on a Pinterest board to introduce ourselves, including French description and a QR code for parent night.

Grade 6/7: Mr Dufrane’s class: Beginning the story ‘Salut mon ami’, and starting to work on comprehension strategies.

Grade 5/6: This group will be doing a basic introduction to a partner, as we review basic vocabulary (weather, numbers, days of week, important sentences).

Grade 5: As for 5/6, with the story being Comment y aller.

Grade 4: Lots of basic vocabulary happening here: numbers, alphabet, weather, days of week, you name it. We will also be beginning our main story, Les 3 Petits Cochons (the 3 little pigs)

In all classes, 10 minutes or so each day of reviewing new vocabulary at home (or review vocabulary right now) is very helpful. Let your kids teach you what they’re learning!

Instrumental music update: We have been able to open up my schedule a bit, to allow me to teach a period of instrumental music each week to each of Mr Lush, Ms Shaw and Mr Dufrane’s classes.  This program will include playing, listening, research and theory. The expectation is that students will take their instruments home to practice (or take advantage of practice times at school) for 30 minutes/week. Expect a contract for taking an instrument home in the next few weeks, or I will shortly have it posted here.

Other stuff:

Web: Yet another bit of digital literacy this week, as Jimmy Kimmel revealed that the “twerk fail” really wasn’t. Talking to your kids about being smart consumers of what they’re seeing on the internet is a great idea. (I chose not to show this to students in class, due to the “twerking” – what do you think?) twerk girl fraud

Book:  At intermediate book club this week, this one, The Fault in our Stars provoked all kinds of reaction, and a lot of the kids said they’d shared it with a parent. Kleenex required, apparently, and there is a film in the works. A teen story about cancer.

Music: Fiona Apple’s done a gorgeous cover of ‘Pure Imagination’ for a really interesting ad campaign for Chipotle Mexican grill, so this is kind of a two-for-one, music and website. Check out the video, read the article, and then talk about it with your kids. Lots of good critical thinking chances here – why would the company make a video like this? Why would a musician like Fiona Apple get involved (and be donating her profits?)
